Owen W. "Hanky" Norris

Owen W. "Hanky" Norris, 86, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, at BridgingLife's Dove House, Westminster. He was born on May 6, 1939, in Sykesville to the late Earle S. Norris and Mabel Johnson Norris. He was the loving husband of Carol D. (Cook) Norris, whom he married on August 8, 1981. Hank was born and raised on Schoolhouse Road, Sykesville. He graduated from the Robert Moton School, Westminster. From his early twenties, he worked with over three generations of the Haight family at Haight Funeral Home & Chapel, Sykesville where he retired after more than 30 years of service as a funeral assistant. He was extremely respected in the community and continued to work at the funeral home as needed until just a year ago when his health did not permit. He also had a second full time career with the Carroll County Public School System as an evening shift custodian at Carrolltowne Elementary School where he also retired. Always working hard, he and his wife had cleaned offices and homes. He also dug graves for many years at Oakland United Methodist Church, Springfield Cemetery and St. Luke's United Methodist Church Cemeteries. He remained as caretaker of St. Luke's Cemetery until his passing. Hank was a corvette enthusiast. He also enjoyed car detailing and bowling and was an avid Baltimore Ravens fan. Hanky was a lifelong member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Sykesville and member of the Former Students of Robert Moton. Surviving in addition to his wife are sons Anthony "Pee Wee" Norris of Sykesville and Craig Norris and wife Christina of Sykesville; daughter Latushia Evans of Taneytown; brother and sister-in-law Hayes and Debbie Norris of Braselton, GA; sisters-in-law Pattie Starke of Marriottsville, Viola Cook of Sykesville, Annette King of Westminster, Shirley Bracey(Charles) of Sykesville and Thelma Randall of Baltimore, brother-in-law Melvin Cook of Sykesville.and grandchildren: Desmond Norris, Keon Norris, Devon Norris, Joseph Domneys and Bria Estep. He is also survived by many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife Alma Randall "Sissy" Norris who died in 1967, his daughter Stephanie Evans Miller, his sister Laura "Nannie" Thomas, grandson Christopher Anthony Norris and his sister Mary Elizabeth Norris The family will receive friends from 10 to 11:30 AM on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at the Legacy Hall at Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department, 6680 Sykesville Road, Sykesville, MD where a funeral service will follow at 11:30 AM. Private interment will be in St. Luke's Church Cemetery, Sykesville.
